what? = its the 3 inch CD version of a fully battery powered soundwork/composition/ infinite symphony called 1 & a Half VOLT MUSIC by Matt Wand.. the piece uses a dozen pocket game machines (Gameboys) programmed to generate permutations of the composers score which was structured using the rules of the game TETRIS ( ie: as gaps appeared in the music the score is adapted to fill them).... the project continues the artists long standing interest in totally portable and cheap noise/music making apparatus,. The CD comprises of about 9 sections taken sequentially from live recordings made during the day of the first performance at The Holden Gallery, Manchester, May2nd 2001. Despite the dry art installation premise, its an engrossing listen as the open acoustics of the space merge and rebound the 8 bit sounds until they turn from tinny to brassy and several of the machines decide they are actually Bass Clarinets???
The piece would not have been possible without the help of Oliver Wittchow who is the programmer of the NANOLOOP cartridges which have been abused in the process of making this work. Matt was approached by Oliver in 2000 to help launch the retail version Nanoloop, writing a track for the NANOLOOP 1.0 compilation CD and touring Germany with him ( and the Goodiepal ) demoing some of the abilities of this pocket marvel. Matt has developed this DIY surround sound piece over the intervening years far beyond these first recordings, utilising gameboy micros, the 2.3 & 2.5 advance versions of the cartridge and various Spaghetti jars as resonators usually in large gallery or church spaces.
Here is a link to a more recent version done with the help of Lucio Capece and Alexis Malbert augmenting the sound with wifi speakers on helium balloons and specially constructed 'wheelie walkmen'. Its the first video "Parking Arrangements"
