Hands of Hair. ( matt wand 2011, super 8 film , 31 minutes )

    Taking its cue and inspiration from a character that no b-movie 'Scientist' would be seen experimenting without: The Ape Man, often caged, always in transformation, whether it be by replacing of the ape brain with human cerebellum, injected with untested sex-change hormones, serums designed to accelerate evolution, artificially morphed from human to ape, male to female, female to hermaphrodite, electrodes implanted for complete remote control or to stimulate psychotic violence. This poor misunderstood creature represents us all in our struggle to remain human in a world determined to poke and prod us into behaving much as the other beasts we live among.    The film is partially constructed from hundreds of in-explicable details from out of copyright b-movies. These bizarre and Non Sequitur film edits are interlinked by our own guerilla/gorilla hands,feet,head film shots plus surreal 'expositional' inter-titles generating an entirely new movie plot explaining the world from the point of view, at last, of this un-preconditioned primate as his role fragments and his psyche devolves from super-rational being to “Colder and dumber and deafer than a fish” and back again.

The film’s sound effects and sound design where originally devised and performed as ‘Live Foley Effects’ in a super 8 film double bill, paired with “I Married A Foley Footstep!”, itself a very focused investigation of the artificiality of footstep sound effects and of acoustic space in film. Hands Of Hair’s soundtrack was generated in full view of the audience using many analog methods, some from the professional foley world and others invented specifically to create a variety of shamefully rudimentary acousmatic atmospheres. The outcome of which produces an alternating process of de-mystification and re-mystification in the listener, as it becomes apparent that - what sounds MOST like 'something' is often not at all THAT 'thing'.

As well as a live recording of the original 2011 soundtrack, this CD harbours a new re-synced and ‘re-grown’ version of the soundtrack executed 2019 in what might be described as a more ‘traditional’ electro-acoustic, multi-track manner. Mainly as screenings of the film are unlikely to have the ‘live performance’ element present in the near future.  

.....The CD and the Download features the soundtrack audio only BUT does also include a private link and personalised password to stream a digital version of the 30 minute movie online.
