Often a remixing task opens up so many avenues of investigation it resembles the futuristic ‘instant pudding’ in the sci-fi movie SLEEPER! One such occasion is a recent request by the hyper-prolific Nederlands artist Machinefabrik or Rutger Zuydervelt to “go at it” with his 17 minute ‘uncharacteristic’ epic Prisma. Partly as an apology for not being able to participate in a similar project he asked me on board for way back in 2006 and partly due to the myriad of ideas already in his original track, the process of taking it apart and seeing what workflow might be most successful generated a multitude of sketchy, half baked and often bewildering lengths of audio that I just couldn’t get my head around and pin down as a ‘remix’. In the end as the final final ‘final’ deadline approached I was forced to acknowledge defeat and simply selected and edited a number of what I considered listenable lengths and sent them to Rutger who to my surprise chose 2 parts to include on the PRISMA+ cd he was producing.
But what to do with the rest of the noises? Well, here is a compilation of 9 of the more fully formed cul-de-sac I ended up heading down. A couple even bear some resemblance to rutger’s original! This release DOES NOT include the 2 tracks on the Machinefabriek release EXCEPT if you buy the CD, which I encourage you to do, either via the very limited number ( a bakers dozen ) available here at Hot Air or the Machinefabriek bandcamp link above, where I believe there is slightly less than a hundred up for grabs.
