Early in 2002 I was asked by the long standing Manchester Contemporary Art organisation “Work & Leisure International” to undertake production for 3 limited art edition 7” vinyls to accompany their exhibition BANDWAGON JUMPING - an incredibly focused overview of artist’s use of the smaller 7” vinyl format commonly associated with the ‘Pop’ music world and hit singles.
The 3 new commissions were by Hayley Newman, the art rock group Die Kunst and as further incentive the final commission went to me.
The fall out from 2001’s “9/11” World Trade Towers ‘reciprocal senselessness’ was still playing out around the world. It’s clear that intensely morbid dreams of having tall buildings collapse on top of me, and what that might sound like, were the main inspiration to research the technical possibility of capturing such a thing in sound for real and to find an opportunity/location with enough time to produce an artifact for the exhibition deadline.

At 12.00 on Sunday, 12th May 2002, after 12 weeks of stripping out windows & asbestos, drilling out walls and cementing in around 100kg of explosives and cables, the 22 stories of Kenley Close, Sheil Rd, Liverpool was reduced to a pile of rubble in less than 6 seconds by the expert explosives engineers of Controlled Demolition Group LTD.
2 days previously, with the generous co-operation of those engineers, I had been able to install a stereo microphone inside the building on the ground floor. The microphone capsules were encased in a cast steel junction box and cabled back to the recorder in the control hut using specialist mineral core cabling supplied by Pyrotenax LTD. This cable's core. is encased in densely packed fire-proof magnesium powder contained within copper tubing, which is itself contained in a re - inforced plastic sheath, not a very flexible cable, but the only one that might survive the explosive force of a "BLOWDOWN". Also I placed a Retell longplay phone conversation tape recorder in a reinforced aluminium case on the roof at 10.30hrs. This, I was informed, had about an 80% chance of being recovered. I offered a cash reward. The case on the roof was unfortunately never found, the microphone cabling, designed specifically for internal communications systems in M.O.D. nuclear bunkers, successfully survived the blast.... but sadly the microphone capsules imploded under the pressure of the final stage explosions at ground floor level.
This 7” vinyl records the final 5 minutes of the life of this edifice, one side in the relatively peaceful interior of the building, the other, a second for second mirror image outside amongst the crowd awaiting a new concrete free skyline............m.w.
